So the big news almost everyone is talking about is the news that Adam Driver is in talks to play Nightwing in Batman Vs. Superman. Call me crazy but the casting of Nightwing is the last thing on my mind. Now I can’t pretend to know a ton about comics as I have never read one, but I can tell you this I love me a superhero. A few years ago if you had asked me to pick between DC and Marvel comics well I would have gone with DC mostly because I grew up with and fell in love with Superman, Batman and of course the amazing Wonder Woman. I had the lunch box, watched the cartoons and yup even have the t-shirts to prove it. But ask me now and I have been swayed. While I still love my DC Superheroes I have a newfound place in my heart for the Marvel Universe, mostly because of the monster that Marvel has become making amazing and fun superhero films. While I knew of Hulk and Captain America I had never heard of Iron Man, Thor, Loki or Nick Fury characters that now I get excited at the mere mention of their names. Why? Well because Marvel has created a cinematic universe to drool over. I have seen all the movies more than once and have fallen for them just as hard as I did for Wonder Woman.
Now I know all my comic book reading friends are spewing words of anger on how I could call myself a fan and not read the comic books, or how I could love Iron Man 3 and its Mandarin but I assure you I come in peace. Marvel created a world for not just comic book readers but for fans of superheroes that everyone can enjoy and allows us to all fall in love with these characters and boy do they know how to have fun while doing it. Believe me as someone who loves to read I know all about falling in love with a character on the pages of a book and then seeing the movie and it being not at all the same. But they shouldn’t be, not to say they shouldn’t be close, but when a movie is a made it is a movie. Yes they have great source material and that is where the idea comes from but the book is the book and the movie is the movie it is about the creativity to tell the story.
To say I was excited for Man Of Steel is an understatement I could not wait till it came out and was of course at the midnight screening with my superman cape on ready to have some fun. Sadly fun was not on the menu for me. While I think the movie was well done it was not my favorite Superman movie. I did enjoy it but I wanted a fun superhero movie, like The Amazing Spider-man, and instead got a very serious take on Superman. Just another case of expectations getting the best of me. When I heard about Man Of Steel 2 I was even more excited thinking ok we can do this, this will be the movie that I will fall in love with all over again just like I had with The Avengers and Thor and then we started getting more and more info about it.
So back to the Nightwing news and Adam Driver. First of all if you can’t see past the role that Adam plays on Girls well then yea I get you thinking this is a bad idea. But Adam Driver is an amazing actor, he proved his skill in theatre far before he ever stepped foot on the Girls set and has proved he is not only talented but also versatile, but this is the last of my concern. I think he would be fine as Nightwing, my problem with this news is that there is room for sidekicks in Batman Vs. Superman period. So we know we are having this movie, we know it will be epic for god sakes its Batman Vs. Superman. I am ready to take this on, I can’t wait for the villain and the fights, but what I can wait for is a crowded film that is just trying to compete with the Marvel Franchise. I can wait for sidekicks, put them in stand alones and Justice League do not shove them into a movie that we need to keep this franchise going. The Nightwing story is a good one and stretches over a long period of time, he works with both Batman and Superman so I ask why are worried about who will play him and why are we not worried about how he will fit into this movie.
