Oh movies, how I love thee. I remember the days of just going to the theatre with friends and looking for the escape through the newest romantic comedy, super hero flick or exciting thriller that would keep me at the edge of my seat. Then I somehow landed the job of personal assistant to a man who was making his first film. It was right around the time I had just sat through The Blind Side for the millionth time and I was so moved by the film I wanted a life change. The life change came through my long and exciting days on set. Learning the ropes and seeing an idea, become a script, become characters that turned into this amazing story and through the work of hundreds of people, a full-length feature film. It was mid-way through production when I realized my passion for film was more than just an escape on the weekends, I wanted film to become an every day part of my life. I had always enjoyed them but never truly appreciated the process. For me film is something that can take you out of your existence, it can bring you to another land. It can make you feel, whether it is happiness, sadness, or fear, it can make you feel and if you are really lucky you will come across an amazing film that can change the way you look at your life and even the world. By the time I worked on my second film I knew the in’s and out’s of the process and fell in love with it. Every day I learned something new and saw a side of the movie industry that I loved that being a part of. I may not have studied film in school but I got first hand on the job experience that in my opinion was the best way to learn. I got to meet legends like Tom Sherak and Oliver Stone, I got to work with amazing actors and actresses and made friends with everyone I could on set so I was constantly learning every side of the film making process. It changed me in a way I never dreamt possible.
I was lucky enough to take the two things I loved the most, hosting and film, and make a career out of it. I get to talk about movies with great critics and I get to talk to the actors about their upcoming projects. I get to watch movies for work! Who knew that was even possible. I have come to love film even more, I watch them all well except for the horror movies because I’m a wimp, and appreciate the time and effort the industry constantly makes to entertain us, to move us, and to blow us away. I love each week seeing new films. I love the huge blockbusters, the cheesy romantic comedies and more than anything I have grown to adore the smaller more intimate independent films. It’s funny I find myself watching movies like Inside Llewyn Davis and Fruitvale Station, movies I may never have even seen 5 years ago and these smaller films are the ones that stay with me the longest. I long for those crazy Young Adult movies like The Hunger Games, Vampire Academy and Divergent where I get to see the characters I fell in love with in these amazing books come to life on the big screen. I am constantly blown away by the fun and exciting comic book movies that are like a wild ride I don’t want to get off of. Some days I want an action flick that will have explosions, great action scenes and a fun story like The Fast And Furious Franchise and other days I want to feel so I will go with something more dramatic like The Spectacular Now, Out Of The Furnace or August: Osage County.
Here is the thing that is truly amazing; each week there is a new experience, a new movie, a new escape. They may not always be five stars, they may not always be blockbusters but there will always be a new movie coming out. If you think about it, it is pretty amazing because movies will never let you down, there will always be something new waiting just around the corner to entertain and excite you. You can see a film with five of your friends and each one of you will take something different out of it, enjoy it in a different way and even have a different opinion. That is truly powerful if you ask me, it is art at its best and I love that it is more a part of my world than I ever imagined.
