Cut to our current state of comedies and yes, there are more than a few great ones like “Superbad”, “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Bridesmaids” but there also seems to be a slew of raunchy and actually unfunny films hitting Theatres constantly as well. Don’t get me wrong I’m not a total prude and enjoy a good laugh with raunchy comedies like “The Sweetest Thing” but while it may have been a bit risqué it was also still really smart and the characters where relatable and fun. I’m not sure what happened but the last few comedies I have seen were not very funny at all. They weren’t smart or well written, the characters weren’t relatable and maybe I’m getting old but I struggled to even smirk never mind laugh. I miss the good old days of “The Big Lebowski” and could use a few less movies like “This Is The End”. I recently saw “Tammy” and was so impressed, not only was it really funny and smart, but the characters felt so real and raw, while it made me laugh out loud it also had a ton of heart. The critics seemed to disagree with me.
Then there is “22 Jump Street” which was not only hysterical but actually made fun of not only itself but also comedies and sequels in general. Chris Miller and Phil Lord proved that you can be funny, smart, and a little raunchy all without dumbing it down and treating their audience as if they were stupid. I really tried to enjoy “Neighbors” and yes there were some really funny moments but the movie as a whole fell flat and felt like a giant, my you know what is bigger than your you know what and while that may have been fun in high school it’s not really funny any more. I did however like that at least the wife in “Neighbors” was strong and in on the fun and not just be the proverbial “wet rag”. Wait did I just admit that it’s because I’m getting old?! While I understand there is still an audience that yearns for comedies that may have more sex appeal and raunchiness than real stories I hope Hollywood doesn’t stray away from the really great ones. So maybe I am getting older as long as we don’t dumb all the comedies down I will be a happy girl.
