In a recent interview with Indiewire’s The Playlist director Greg Jacobs opened up about the sequel saying as much as he was allowed too. The biggest bomb that was dropped was that Matthew McConaughey will not be returning to reprise his role as Dallas in the sequel to MAGIC MIKE. While in the past Channing Tatum had said the entire cast would return, that rumor was nipped in the bud when Jacobs spoke to The Playlist last week. You may remember over Labor Day weekend Steven Soderbergh posted slates on his twitter account but Jacobs assured that it was only second unit footage they were shooting and the real shoot doesn’t begin till the end of the month. While he did say that much of the cast would return to reprise their roles such as Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello he could not reveal who else was returning or which newcomers were signing on to the project.
McConaughey who is no doubt at a high in his career after the success and Oscar win for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, he is also most likely in a situation that any role is his for the taking. Breaking free from his career once anchored in romantic comedies he has shown his versatility and redefined his career. While the reason McConaughey isn’t returning isn’t stated in the article, one has to wonder if it just isn’t in the cards or the script or if the actor chose not to come back to the project. MAGIC MIKE was made on a budget of just $7 million so it is pretty safe to say that the sequel will not be too far off from that number.
What Jacobs did say is that MAGIC MIKE XXL will be “very different.” “It’s road trip movie and put it this way, it’s different enough that once you see it you’ll understand why we made a sequel. No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice.” Co-written by Reid Carolin and Channing Tatum, MAGIC MIKE XXL opens July 1, 2015. While I can hear the screams of women everywhere already feeling the loss of McConaughey fret not I can almost guarantee you that Joe Manganiello will be back and shirtless quicker than we can dry our tears and we always have Matthew McConaughey’s INTERSTELLAR to look forward to which opens on November 7, 2014.
