It was announced yesterday that Lionsgate’s new comedy MORTDECAI was bumped up from opening on February 6, 2015 to January 23, 2015. In its previous spot MORTDECAI would have gone up head to head against the Wachowskis JUPITER ASCENDING, the fantasy adventure, SEVENTH SON and THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER. With its new opening date the film will instead be up against the Jennifer Lopez Thriller THE BOY NEXT DOOR.
Making room for MORTDECAI Lionsgate will shift its new romantic drama AGE OF ADALINE from that January release date to April 24. The film stars Harrison Ford, Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Ellen Burstyn, Amanda Crew, and Kathy Baker and centers on a woman who has an accident that prevents her from aging. In its new slot, the film will be up against Bill Murray’s ROCK THE KASBAH and may get a one week break before THE AVENGERS 2 opens up which will most certainly dominate the box office.
If you are a fan of Johnny Depp in these quirky roles than this means good news, we get to see him action two weeks early. MORTDECAI is based on a novel entitled “Don’t Point That Thing At Me” by Kyril Bonfiglioli and is described as follows:
Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.
Judging by the studios confidence, the star-studded cast, talks of a sequel and the look of the hilarious teaser trailer they released about a month ago it seems to all add up to success. If your like me and you love these unconventional comedies with an old-time feel then be sure and check out this teaser trailer if you haven’t already. Nothing shows the brilliance of Johnny Depp in these roles than when he delivers the line “No, I do not need help with my bags, I have a bloody man-servant!” in this teaser!
