Yesterday the 4th and most likely final trailer for Christopher Nolan’s new mystery, sci-fi INTERSTELLAR was released. Nolan has made some pretty epic films in his time like MEMENTO, INCEPTION and THE PRESTIGE but none were criticized as much as BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. I have seen grown men get into fights over this Batman trilogy.
Since the announcement of INTERSTELLAR fans and critics alike have both praised and ripped apart the filmmaker. With a talented cast of actors such as Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain, Nolan fans are hoping this film puts the writer/director back in the good graces of audiences everywhere. The initial trailers kept us mostly on earth and in this new trailer we get to see a bit more of Nolan’s version of space. It is clear earth is in trouble and it is up to Cooper (McConaughey) and Brand (Hathaway) to save the world. The trailer and images are visually stunning and while I look forward to seeing Nolan’s vision hit the big screen, I have to say that what I know of the story and what I have seen so far in the trailers I fear it may be a bit boring, yup I said it boring. Nolan has been known to have almost cryptic trailers not releasing too much info in each trailer but I fear that I haven’t seen enough to get me hooked or excited. Will I go see it, of course, but I am keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t turn out the way GRAVITY did for me. While it was amazing and visually stunning to see things we haven’t seen before, while it was breathtaking to actually feel like we were in space floating with Sandra Bullock, I felt the movie as a whole fell flat.
A few weeks ago McConaughey commented on the film saying:
“This is the grandest adventure I think any of us will ever see on film…This is the biggest film I’ve ever been a part of. This is one of the biggest films anyone’s ever been a part of”
“I am so excited for the world to receive this film, because there’s going to be a new conversation I believe will happen because of it. It’s not a dry, science-based film. It has a pulse. It’s got blood in it’s veins.”
Hearing Hathaway’s comments, so far is about the only thing that has me excited for this film. While I’m a huge fan of Nolan, this talented cast, and sci-fi’s so far nothing about this film has actually spoke to me until this. I am the biggest supporter in the world of films that start conversations, especially ones that have to do with making the world a better place for all of us to live in. Entertainment with purpose makes me do a happy dance.
It will be interesting to see Nolan’s take on the end of the world as we know it and what we will find in space, I just hope those huge waves are not the most exciting part of the movie. Check out the trailer and let me know what you think! Let’s hope INTERSTELLAR makes all do a little happy dance!
