BLACK PANTHER fans everywhere have been patiently waiting to see the first black superhero in mainstream American Comics to hit the big screen and the wait is almost over. In a special presentation today Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that BLACK PANTHER, also known as T’Challa, is coming to life in a very big way. We will first see the superhero in the third installment of the CAPTAIN AMERICA franchise, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR set to hit theatres on May 6, 2016, where he will be starring along side CAPTAIN AMERICA star Chris Evans and IRON MAN star Robert Downey, Jr.. We will then get a standalone film hitting theatres on November 3, 2017 currently titled BLACK PANTHER. There has been constant speculation on who should portray the groundbreaking superhero and today Feige announced that Chadwick Bosemn will be taking on the iconic character.
Boseman first wowed audiences in 42 where he portrayed the young Jackie Robinson, he then appeared in 2014’s DRAFT DAY taking on the role of a stressed out and overlooked football player Vontae Mack. Both films showed the actor was good but it wasn’t until he fully embodied James Brown in GET ON UP that his versatility was taken seriously. I have no doubt that Boseman will give us another great performance and look forward to his take on the character.
BLACK PANTHER made his debut in the comics in Fantastic Four #52-53 in 1966 and went on to make guest appearances in Fantastic Four Annual #5 (1967), joined Captain America in Tales Of Suspense #97-99 (1968) and then joined the American Superhero team in The Avengers #52 (1968). He received his first starring issue in 1973 with Jungle Action #5, the series ran from September of 1973-November of 1967 Jungle Action #6-24, Panthers Rage has been called “Marvel’s first graphic novel.” Writer and editor Dwayne McDuffie complimented Jungle Action “Black Panther” by saying:
“This overlooked and underrated classic is arguably the most tightly written multi-part superhero epic ever. If you can get your hands on it … sit down and read the whole thing. It’s damn-near flawless, every issue, every scene, a functional, necessary part of the whole.”
BLACK PANTHER has gone on to team up with FANTASTIC FOUR, THE AVENGERS, THE DEFENDERS and has appeared in countless comics spanning the years. He has superhuman senses and can increases his strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and agility to Olympic-levels. He is a skilled hunter, tracker, politician and scientist with Ph.D from Oxford.
