Walt Disney released a new featurette “A Look Inside INTO THE WOODS” and it is downright magical. It features wonderful clips of the upcoming film with the cast and crew providing commentary bringing you a fantastic teaser for the December release.
INTO THE WOODS premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987, at the Martin Beck Theatre. The production, which ran for 764 performances, and has been produced around the world. From the stage, to our televisions all the way to the big screen INTO THE WOODS has won countless awards including Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book Of A Musical, and Best Actress In A Musical. The film version will include many of the original songs like “On the Steps of the Palace,” “No One Is Alone” along with many others. The big screen version is already setting up to be just as charmed having enough Oscar Winners and nominees working on the project, both on-screen and off, to line my entire bedroom with their coveted little bronze statues.
The star-studded cast includes Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Daniel Huttlestone, Tracey Ullman, Lilla Crawford and Johnny Depp. INTO THE WOODS is described as:
“A modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (Mauzy), all tied together by an original story involving a Baker and his Wife (Corden & Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the Witch (Streep), who has put a curse on them.”
The man keeping all these A-listers in line is none other than Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical CHICAGO and Disney’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, who is also a producer on the film. The screenplay is penned by creator of the Tony Award winning original musical James Lapine who will be teaming back up with legendary composer Stephen Sondheim for the music and lyrics. With the few photos and clips we have seen you can see the fantasy come to life in each costume no doubt because of the hard work and beautiful imagination of three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood (MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, CHICAGO, ALICE IN WONDERLAND) as costume designer.
