INHERENT VICE is one of my most anticipated movies this year, yesterday the first trailer hit the web and is already making waves. The trailer starts with a narration by Joanna Newsom:
“If it’s a quiet night out at the beach, and your ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend and his wife and her boyfriend and a plot to kidnap the billionaire and throw him in a loony bin, maybe you should just look the other way, but if your Doc it may all start to get a little peculiar after that.”
It is one part film noir, one part psychedelic, one part BOOGIE NIGHTS and all around fun. In a film that has a cast of characters that include surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, it promises to be nothing like we have ever seen.
Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood did the score and had me dancing through the entire trailer from my seat. With films like BOOGIE NIGHTS, MAGNOLIA, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, THE MASTER Paul Thomas Anderson has proven to be an outstanding director. When Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers wrote his fall movie preview for 2014 he wrote:
“Is Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master) the best director of his generation? I think so. So when PTA takes on the impossible task of filming Inherent Vice, Thomas Pynchon’s impossible phantasmagoria of a novel, attention must be paid.”
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix , Josh Brolin , Owen Wilson , Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro , Martin Short, Jena Malone, and Joanna Newsom and is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon. INHERENT VICE opens in limited release on December 12, 2014 and will be expanding on January 9, 2015.
