If you have not read THE DIVERGENT TRILOGY by Veronica Roth you are truly missing out on an amazing trilogy. With the success of other YA sci-fi books being adapted into films, it has been wonderful to see the success of the first film in the series DIVERGENT. In DIVERGENT we were introduced to a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago and meet Beatrice “Tris” Prior while she explores her identity within a very extreme society which defines its citizens and social standing by personality-related affiliations within five factions. These factions based on each persons dispositions are: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intellectual. As seen in DIVERGENT each year the 16-year-old members are given an aptitude test which tells them which factions they could fit in to and are given a choice to stay with their families and factions or to join one of the other factions given to them at the end of their test. There is then the initiation process and those that do not complete the tasks given remain factionless which is a future no-one wants as they become homeless and are forced to a life of poverty on the streets. As seen in the first film Tris never really feels as if she fits in anywhere yet chooses Dauntless to hide that fact that she is truly Divergent, which is a mysterious, dangerous and must be kept a secret. Suddenly things start to change and Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the Erudite leader becomes increasingly more powerful and tries not only find the Divergents, but kill them. Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her mentor Four (Theo James) risk their lives and their families lives to put a stop to the horrific events happening at the hand of Jeanine.
The second film in the franchise THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT is set to hit theatres on March 20, 2015 and the first Teaser Trailer & poster were released last week. In the sequel the stakes are raised once again for Tris as she searches for allies and answers, she and Four are fugitives on the run still being hunted by Jeanine the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.
Fans of other YA books such as THE HUNGER GAMES and THE MAZE RUNNER will enjoy THE DIVERGENT SERIES because of its similar themes. While I am a huge fan of both the books and films in THE HUNGER GAMES franchise when it comes to the story the DIVERGENT trilogy of books reign supreme. While I will always love Katniss and THE HUNGER GAMES to me DIVERGENT felt different and there was something about Tris and the ending of the trilogy that has stayed with me a bit longer. If you watched or are familiar with the books the images we see in this teaser trailer are most likely a part of one of Tris’ fear landscapes or part of a bad dream, but if this is not enough to get you excited for the next installment on the franchise you may need to check your pulse.
