I am not sure it is because she is the first princess I remember reading about, or because she was the first princess I ever wanted become, or maybe it was because it was the first love story I can remember falling in love with myself but while watching the first official trailer for Disney’s new live action film, CINDERELLA, I found myself extremely emotional. I am pretty sure at one point every little girl wanted to become CINDERELLA, wanted a fairy godmother to make her a beautiful gown to wear to a ball to meet her one true love. There have been millions of dreams of little girls turning into beautiful princesses riding away in their horse-drawn carriage to meet their very own prince. Our imaginations can deliver wonderful lifelong visions of our own “Happily Ever After” to carry us through life sometimes changing ever so slightly as we grow older, and now we get to see it brought to life in a beautiful way. There is something about the timeless story of CINDERELLA that has stuck with millions of little girls and grown women for centuries.
The story of CINDERELLA dates all the way back to 1634, it was then called “Cenerentola” by Giambattista Basile, and featured Zezolla who was the Cinderella figure. In 1697 came “Cendrillon,” which translates into CINDERELLA, by Charles Perrault. Sometime in the 19th century The Brothers Grimm, told the story of “Aschenputtel” (also translates to CINDERELLA,) as part of their folk tale collection “Grimms’ Fairy Tales.” There have been countless adaptations in many different mediums from books to television, from the stage all the way to the big screen, but it was on February 15, 1950 that Disney released their animated feature film adaptation of the beloved fairy tale. It is not only the most well-known film adaptation but is also considered one of Disney’s Classics. With the success of live action adaptations of popular fairy tales in the past several years it only seems fitting that CINDERELLA be brought back to the big screen in such a magical way by the people who know how to make magic out of anything, Walt Disney Studios, for fans old and new to fall in love.
Set to hit theaters on March 15, 2015, this live-action feature is film based on the timeless fairy tale of CINDERELLA, with a few minor changes. CINDERELLA is described as follows:
“The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.”
With a star-studded cast and Academy Award® nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Thor,” “Hamlet”) at the helm, the film seems to have the stars aligned to be an instant success. Yesterday Walt Disney Studios released the first official trailer, poster and brand new images from the film and they are everything I dreamed and more. If this new trailer and images tell us anything, it is that we are about to see CINDERELLA be brought to life in what looks to be possibly the best version yet. Being one of my favorite fairy tales this film has some pretty big shoes to fill, or should I say glass slippers, and I am already in tears and completely struck by its beauty. This stunning new poster was photographed by the iconic Annie Leibovitz exclusively for the films campaign and it is absolute perfection.
Get ready to be taken on an enchanted journey, by the always magical Walt Disney Studios, and check out the first official trailer for CINDERELLA that we can not stop watching ourselves. You can also see additional photos by Annie Leibovitz featuring the cast from the film in the costume feature of Vogue magazine’s December issue, on stands now.
