In 1995 the world was introduced and fell in love with Woody and Buzz Lightyear in TOY STORY a film about a little boy named Andy who loves to be in his room and play with his toys, especially his cowboy named Woody. Andy may be moving but not without his birthday party being held at his childhood home where he is given a new action figure named Buzz Lightyear. But it is when Andy goes to school and the bedroom door closes that the story really begins to take place. Buzz quickly becomes Andy’s new favorite toy and Woody, consumed with jealousy tries to get rid of him, but soon both are lost and in jeopardy of not making it back in time to move to the new house with Andy. With hilarious characters and a heartwarming story, TOY STORY became an instant classic and favorite of children of all ages. The franchise continued with TOY STORY 2 in 1999 this time Woody is stolen by a toy collector and Buzz vows to save him. TOY STORY 3 hit in 2010 and the toys were mistakenly shipped off to a day-care center the night before Andy is supposed to leave for college. There were video games, board games specials and spin offs like TOY STORY TOONS: HAWAIIAN VACATION and there were toys, boy were there toys. the TOY STORY merchandise alone has to have made millions. Children everywhere know and most likely own their very own Woody doll or Buzz Lightyear action figure. At Halloween you can almost always find a child dressed up as one of the characters from the film. It was a buddy-comedy action adventure film like the world had never seen and the very first theatrical film produced by Pixar and remains one of the most well-known and successful franchises for Disney and Pixar.
As the sequels came out the toys and Andy grew just like the children that grew up watching them and when we all watched as Andy went off to college there was a bitter-sweet feeling that this may be the last of the beloved franchise, all good things must come to an end right? Not when you are dealing with Disney they don’t. After years of speculation last week Disney/Pixar revealed plans for TOY STORY 4. I think I may have actually squealed with anticipation. The film will be directed by John Lasseter and is a story dreamt up by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three TOY STORY films, and will open a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the TOY STORY gang. Lasseter said:
“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us, we don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”
There is no news yet on the story of course but rumors have already been flying about what the new adventure may be. When we last saw Andy in 2010 he was heading off to college, TOY STORY 4 is set to hit theatres on June 16, 2017. That is seven years since we last saw Andy and the TOY STORY gang, a LOT can happen in seven years like Andy graduating from college, getting married and say I don’t know having kids of his very own? A girl can dream, but I don’t know if anything could make me happier than seeing Andy all grown up, married, with kids sharing his favorite childhood toys with his very own children who would of course have toys with ever-changing technology that may make Woody and Buzz look a bit like old toys, but we know better than that don’t we! Woody and Buzz will have no problem showing Andy’s kids just how special they are, just like they showed us how special they were all those years ago and have remained in our hearts ever since.
