The long-awaited and highly anticipated sequel to DIVERGENT, THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT is hitting theatres on March 20, 2015, with early viewings on the 19 that are almost all sold out. Based on the trilogy of young adult novels by Veronica Roth, the series has been a hit in both bookstores and theatres everywhere. The three novels Divergent, Insurgent & Allegiant follow heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior in a dystopian future on a journey unlike any other. With the final trailer being released just last week, fans are drooling to see Tris (Shailene Woodley) & Four (Theo James) back in action.
If you missed DIVERGENT while it was in theatres you are in luck because you can catch up before opening weekend by watching the film on Amazon and Itunes. In DIVERGENT we are taken to a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago where everyone is separated into five factions based on their disposition: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intellectual. Each year, at the age of sixteen an aptitude test is given to find out which faction they are best suited for. Once they are given their results they will be able to then stay with the faction they were born into or decide to move into another faction, on choosing day. Once choosing day is over each faction has an initiation that they must complete, if they fail they are destined to become factionless and live in poverty on the streets. Beatrice Prior is born into an Abnegation family but she feels like she doesn’t quite fit in and she finds out why when given her aptitude test. Her test indicates aptitude for three factions: Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless something that should never happen which means she is a Divergent. The girl giving her the test warns her to tell no-one of her results and never to talk about being Divergent because it is much to dangerous yet doesn’t tell Beatrice why. When choosing day arrives Beatrice struggles with her secret and the choice she has to make that will effect the rest of her life, in the end she chooses to leave her parents in Abnegation and join the fearless, brave and somewhat crazy Dauntless and begins her new and exciting life as Tris. Initiation proves tougher and more dangerous than she ever imagined as she quickly makes as many friends as she does enemies. But her training is nothing compared to the nightmare that is about to become her life when she realizes that Erudite plans to use the Dauntless to stage an attack on the Abnegation by using a serum to control their minds and turning them into sleepwalking soldiers. But the serum doesn’t work on Divergent’s which makes them prey to Erudite leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet.) Tris and Four, both Divergent, escape and are on the run trying to stop Jeanine and save not only the Divergent’s but everyone else from her evil plan, but not without suffering great loss along the way.
In THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT we pick up right where DIVERGENT left off and Tris, Four, Caleb, Peter, Christina and Marcus travel to Amity, where several surviving Abnegation have settled. Amity issues a statement that all factions may seek refuge there as long as they live in peace. But Tris and Four don’t have time on their sides and the two must race against time to find out what her parents sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. The two face one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world. Octavia Spencer will join the already star-studded cast, Golden Globe®-nominee Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Academy Award®-winner Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer, as Johanna the leader of Amity.
The series has been compared to other YA titles such as THE MAZE RUNNER and THE HUNGER GAMES for their similar themes but the journey of Tris is unlike any other. If you haven’t read the novels I highly recommend that you do, while the films stay faithful they can’t include everything and the series is one of the best I have read. Much like other YA franchises of novels adapted to films the final book ALLEGIANT will be split into two films. This should come as no surprise since it has worked for Lionsgate in the past with both TWILIGHT and THE HUNGER GAMES. Now DIVERGENT fans have two more exciting films to look forward to, ALLEGIANT PART 1 which is set to hit theatres on March 18, 2016 and ALLEGIANT PART 2 slated for March 24, 2017.
