Greetings, Programs! Rev up your Lightcycles and grab your Identity Discs, because we’re going back to the Grid! According to report from Vancity Buzz, the third film in the franchise has been greenlit and is scheduled to begin filming in Vancouver on October 5th, 2015. Thankfully it seems Disney has decided that waiting nearly three decades for another sequel to the 1982 cult-classic was too long to keep fans waiting. While this is exciting news, as of right now only Garrett Helund has been confirmed to reprise his role as Sam Flynn. There is no word whether or not Olivia Wilde, Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan, Cillian Murphy, or David Warner will reprise their roles from previous installments in the franchise, or if Daft Punk will be returning to compose the score. On the plus side, we are happy to report that TRON: LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski will also be returning to helm the third entry in the series.
This comes as great news to fans of the franchise, as hopes of a sequel had dimmed in January of 2013 after the animated series TRON: UPRISING had been cancelled after only 19 episodes, despite stellar stylized animation, good writing, and a top-notch voice cast. Personally, I feared the cancellation of this great show meant it would be the last time I would see the any iteration of the series; that Disney was giving up on the beloved franchise altogether. However, with this announcement, I hope to see Tron fighting for the Users again in this next installment, as his fate was left unresolved in the previous film. Let’s just hope that no matter where they decide to go with the story, the titular Tron will be in this next sequel more than he was in TRON: LEGACY.
