Jonah Hill (21 JUMP STREET, SUPERBAD) and James Franco ( PALO ALTO, THIS IS THE END, HOMEFRONT) take a break from being funny in their upcoming film. Fox Searchlight and Regency Enterprises Present A New Regency / Plan B Production TRUE STORY. Directed by Rupert Goold, from a screenplay by Goold and David Kajganich, produced by Dede Gardner (12 YEARS A SLAVE, WORLD WAR Z), Jeremy Kleiner ( 12 YEARS A SLAVE, KICK ASS, WORLD WAR Z), and Anthony Katagas (12 YEARS A SLAVE), with Brad Pitt ( 12 YEARS A SLAVE, WORLD WAR Z) and Arnon Milchan (12 YEARS A SLAVE, GONE GIRL, FIGHT CLUB) as Executive Producers.
True story is described as follows:
“When disgraced New York Times reporter Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) meets accused killer Christian Longo (James Franco) – who has taken on Finkel’s identity – his investigation morphs into an unforgettable game of cat-and-mouse. Based on actual events, Finkel’s relentless pursuit of Longo’s true story encompasses murder, love, deceit and redemption.”
Felicity Jones (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) joins Franco and Hill in this intriguing and intense film based on actual events. The screenplay was written based on the book True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa written by Michael Finkel.
In February 2002 Christian Longo was captured and arrested in Mexico, he was wanted for killing his entire family, he also took on a new identity that of Michael Finkel of The New York Times. The next day in the Times came more upsetting news: a note from the editors explaining that Finkel, having falsified parts of an investigative article, and he had been fired. For some odd reason the only journalist Longo would speak to was of course the one who he’d tried to pretend to be. Finkel being a journalist through and through Oregon’s Lincoln County Jail to get the true story, it was the beginning of a bizarre and life changing relationship. One review of the memoir said:
“True Story weaves a spellbinding tale of murder, love, and deceit with a deeply personal inquiry into the slippery nature of truth.”
While Hill and Franco are best known for comedic roles, both seem to give stellar performances in the little we get from the trailer. I was enamored by Franco’s performances in both SPRING BREAKERS and HOMEFRONT, in both films he nailed his roles and showed he had some serious diversity. While this will be the first feature film for director Rupert Goold, who has done a few TV series, he has the almost all of the producers who worked on 12 YEARS A SLAVE on board and knowing how amazing that film turned out, they clearly see something amazing in Goold which gives me faith in the film. The trailer does exactly what you want a trailer to, gives you just enough that you are left wanting more at the end. Who doesn’t love a good thrilling true story, especially one that is as creepy as this one seems to be. Check out the intense and thrilling new trailer below and let us know if you are as excited as we are for TRUE STORY.
