Hold on to your butts, because a clip from the upcoming JURASSIC WORLD has been released! In this clip, we get a conversation between Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard). The two of them are clearly on different ends of the ideological spectrum on pretty much every subject: messing with dino DNA to create a new species, what is the proper protocol and attire for a first date, and whether or not the dinosaurs themselves should be treated as living creatures or scientific experiments. What’s interesting about this clip is that it presents Grady’s mentality towards the dinosaurs to be the correct one, that he’s able to work with raptors because he’s built up a relationship of mutual respect with those clever girls. I find this incredibly odd because I’m pretty sure that the main theme of all three films (and probably this one too) is that “nature cannot be contained or controlled”, not “nature can’t be contained or controlled unless you’re nice to it.” Isn’t the point of showing that a park like this can’t work undermined by the fact that you can train the animals that the series has deemed the deadliest hunters in the world?
Mixed messages aside, both actors seem to be giving good performances. Chris Pratt is as loveable as ever and Bryce Dallas Howard seems to be having fun playing someone more in tune with numbers and calculations than other human beings. That being said, this clip does little to change my skeptical approach to the fourth film in the franchise. As much as I enjoy the (admittedly very flawed) second film, nothing in the franchise has been able to capture the wonder, terror, and awe that audiences felt when watching the original. Maybe it’s the nostalgia goggles I’m surely wearing when I look at the original JURASSIC PARK, or maybe it’s just that I’ve become jaded with the overuse of computer animation (especially when considering how much the original film relied on puppets and animatronics), but after the lackluster third film, there’s very little that can get me excited for this upcoming film. I hope to be proven wrong, because there would be nothing I’d love more than to see a franchise brought back to its former glory after I thought it had long gone extinct. However, it’s still going to take more than Chris Pratt on a motorcycle with his raptor crew to change my mind.
What did you think of the clip? Has Chris Pratt’s charm won you over, or do you think they should have left the bones of this franchise in the ground?
JURRASIC WORLD opens June 12th, 2015.
