Teaser Trailer For The Live-Action ATTACK ON TITAN Film Has Been Released

Seid ihr das Essen? Nein, wir sind der Jäger! If you’re a fan of the runaway hit ATTACK ON TITAN, chances are you’ll be singing that all day after you check out the clip below. You’ve probably known for some time that a live-action film has been in the works since the series became a hit. Last year test footage for the film was shown in a car commercial to display how the monstrous Titans would look in a live-action setting, and ever since fans have been anxious to see what a full live-action film could do for the franchise. Well, be prepared Titan fans, because the first teaser footage of the film has been released.

For those unfamiliar with the series, ATTACK ON TITAN is a popular Japanese manga that was adapted into a hit anime series in 2013 (all 25 episodes are available on Hulu, Netflix, DVD, and Blu-ray if you need to get caught up before the live-action film is released). The series focuses around Eren Jaeger, a young man who is determined to protect what is left of mankind from giant man-eating creatures known as Titans. In this post-apocalyptic setting, humanity has been forced to retreat into a small, secluded part of the world where only a series of three walls protect them from the monsters outside. When the Titans break through the first wall, Eren, along with his friends Mikasa and Armin, make it their mission to avenge the loss of their hometown and discover the truth behind the origins of the Titans, no matter what the cost. Popularity for the franchise hasn’t diminished in the slightest since its release; with upcoming theme-park attractions, a second season of the hit anime in the works, this live-action film, and even an upcoming cross-over with Marvel, the ATTACK ON TITAN franchise seems to be just as unstoppable as the Titans themselves.

But what does this teaser trailer actually show us? It looks like standard ATTACK ON TITAN imagery: people running in panic, cadets in uniform looking forlorn, debris flying through the air destroying buildings, and of course a final shot of the Colossal Titan reaching over the wall. While that shot is exciting, I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get to see the 3D maneuvering gear in use at all in this trailer. One of the coolest parts of the series is the steampunk device that allows our heroes to swing through the city like Spider-man, and as of right now we still haven’t caught a glimpse of that. However, I was overjoyed to see Hanji looking just as enthusiastic as ever, so that’s definitely something I’m looking forward to seeing on the big screen. Another interesting note is the “dark and gritty” aesthetic the film seems to be establishing. It’s true that a good portion of the first arc of the series took place on a rainy day, but I wouldn’t say that described the overall look of the series itself. However, given the dark subject matter, gruesome imagery, and the substantially high character body count the series is infamous for, it doesn’t come as a surprise that they would want to keep the look dark as well.

There are a lot of questions about the film that remain unanswered, like whether or not this film will focus primarily on the attack on Trost, or if it will deviate from the comics and the anime to adhere to a more concise, 90-minute three-act structure. I’m going to go off on a limb and assume that this film isn’t going to provide any answers for questions that fans have been asking since the animated series went on hiatus (ie. what IS in that basement?! I need to know!), but all in all the film looks to be keeping to the same spirit as other incarnations of the franchise. Whatever the case may be, it’s great to finally catch a glimpse of what this film is going to look like. Let’s just hope that the makers of the film know that they have some big shoes to fill if they’re going to please fans of the series.
