With it’s opening weekend less than a week away Sony Pictures Entertainment released this new ALOHA Featurette entitled The Spirit Of Hawaii. I am not sure why but every time I see a new trailer for this film I think TOP GUN. Directed by Cameron Crowe (ALMOST FAMOUS, JERRY MCGUIRE, VANILLA SKY) , starring Bradley Cooper (SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMERICAN HUSTLE), Emma Stone (EASY A, THE HELP, BIRDMAN, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN), Rachel McAdams (THE NOTEBOOK, MEAN GIRLS, ABOUT TIME), joined by a fabulous supporting cast John Krasinski (AWAY WE GO, The Office) , Bill Murray (GHOSTBUSTERS, GROUNDHOG DAY), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, IT’S COMPLICATED) and Danny McBride (EASTBOUND & DOWN), just to name a few, ALOHA is a romantic comedy about a military contracter who returns to the place of his greatest career triumphs and the place where he will have to see on old girlfriend from long ago.
ALOHA is described as follows:
In Aloha, a celebrated military contractor (Bradley Cooper) returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs – the US Space program in Honolulu, Hawaii – and reconnects with a long-ago love (Rachel McAdams) while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog (Emma Stone) assigned to him. From Academy Award®-winner Cameron Crowe, the writer-director behind such films as Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, Aloha also stars Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, and Alec Baldwin.
Set in Hawaii, with the tagline “Sometimes you have to say goodbye, before you can say hello”, ALOHA seems to be the perfect name for the film even if some people aren’t happy about the title. While the word ALOHA has the obvious meaning of hello and goodbye, it also has broader meaning to the natives, it is a way to convey love but it also has other meanings like compassion, mercy and grace as told to the the New York Daily News. While it is clear non of us have yet seen the film, my thoughts are until you see it, maybe they should wait before judging. It is clear from the trailers we have seen that the main character Brian Gilcrest played by Cooper runs into an ex and may have some decisions to make before falling in love again, it seems to me with the tagline of “Sometimes you have to say goodbye, before you can say hello” that the title may be perfectly fitting. AS well know in relationships one needs compassion and grace to let go of the past and fully move on into the future with matters of the heart it doesn’t seem to me the word is misused at all. While the film opens here on friday there will be a special screening held three days earlier Honolulu, one can only hope that life reflects art and those that are unhappy with the title will see that it was used with great care. One thing we know for sure is Crowe is great at telling stories and carefully depicting love in many different ways.
I for one an extremely excited for the new film, and hope that it reminds me of TOP GUN in the very best of ways and tells a wonderful and timeless love story that we can go back to years from now and re-watch with the same enthusiasm that we do all our old favorites. ALOHA opens in theatres this Friday May 29, 2015. Check out the new featurette below where we see a behind the scenes look at the film and hear from the cast and filmmakers and let us know if you are excited for ALOHA.
