On May 21st, 2015 Lionsgate released the trailer for their new zombie flick COOTIES. Elijah Wood just can’t catch a break when it comes to supernatural shenanigans at public schools. First he had to deal with an alien infestation in THE FACULTY, and now that he’s a teacher he has to deal with swarms of zombie children trying to rip him limb from limb. Ugh, Mondays, am I right?
The film is the collective brain child of Leigh Whannell (co-creator of SAW and INSIDIOUS) and Ian Brennan (co-creator of GLEE), and both the horror and humor look as on point as ever as it simultaneously lampoons horror and the public school system. The trailer shows us that Elijah Wood plays a pushover of a teacher at an elementary school overrun with disrespectful, rowdy children. Suddenly all hell breaks looks when the subpar cafeteria food causes a deadly virus to spread, turning all the children into savage zombies bent on destroying everything in their path. Now he and his fellow teachers, including Rainn Wilson and Alison Pill, must fight to survive to make their way across the playground, while also trying not to kill each other in the process.
To put it plainly, this trailer makes the film look like a ton of fun. Influence from other zombie comedies such as SHAUN OF THE DEAD, ZOMBIELAND, and even PARANORMAN (and do I see a few nods to ALIENS as well? Well played, movie.) are evident throughout the trailer; but rather than feeling like a rip-off of these films, the film looks as though it maintains its own style and sense of humor so that it feel new rather that played out. Dark and cynical with just the right amount of silly action and slapstick, COOTIES looks like it will be giving audiences a good dose of Halloween fun.
COOTIES opens in theaters September 18th, 2015.
What did you think of the trailer? Are you excited to catch this film in theaters or will you be scheduling your annual cootie shot this September? Be sure to let us know @TheMovieChickk!
