Carey Mulligan Shines In The SUFFRAGETTE Trailer

On June 4th, 2015, Focus Features released the first trailer for its upcoming historical drama SUFFRAGETTE.

Director Sarah Gavron’s film stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, Natalie Press, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep. SUFFRAGETTE is written by Abi Morgan (“The Iron Lady,” “The Hour”) and produced by Alison Owen (“Elizabeth,” “Temple Grandin”) and Faye Ward (“Jane Eyre,” “Dancing on the Edge”).

SUFFRAGETTE is advertised as a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. The story centers around Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she secretly joins the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. Inspired by true events, SUFFRAGETTE appears to be a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives.

filming

I’ll be honest, based on the struggles that it appears Maud will have to endure, this movie looks as though it will be extremely difficult to get through. That being said, like many other historical dramas, it looks like it will be an important film for us all to see. When it comes to historical dramas, the historical contributions of women and minorities are often overlooked, and a willingness to tell such stories are often dismissed because of a misconception of what is “historically accurate.” As such, it is important for filmmakers and storytellers of all kinds to ensure that when these stories are told, they are done so with the utmost respect to the people they were based on, whose stories had gone ignored for so long. Based on the trailer, it looks like the filmmakers have done just that. Even though it will be difficult, I’m very much looking forward to seeing this film, even though I’ll probably need a packet of Kleenexes to get through it.

SUFFRAGETTE will open in limited release on October 23rd and will be in theaters nationwide by Thanksgiving.
