A huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival, DOPE is heading to the big screen this weekend. Directed and written by Rick Famuyiwa the film is like nothing we have seen before. Described as a comedy, drama but it has more heart than anyone could have imagined.
DOPE is the story of Malcolm (Shameik Moore) who is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles, Inglewood to be exact. In a setting we have seen before, a chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself. The film stars Shameik Moore, Kiersey Clemons, Tony Revolori, A$AP Rocky, Blake Anderson, Chanel Iman, Quincy Brown, Kimberly Elise, Keith Stanfield and Zoe Kravitz . These character posters alone should set the tone for the groundbreaking film.
While we have seen other films show us the mean streets of Los Angeles before, Famuyiwa’s DOPE takes a look at that same neighborhood from a different perspective, that of a geek who is obsessed with 90’s hip-hop. Joined by his best friends Jib and Diggy, the nerdy outsiders form a band rather than joining a gang and embark on a journey that will change them forever. With an epic soundtrack and characters you can’t help but fall in love with DOPE takes you on a fun ride all while making you question the way you view people. It also has some heavy hitters behind it, producers Forest Whitaker (who also serves as the films narrator) and Nina Yang Bongiovi who brought you FRUITVALE STATION and executive producers Pharrell Williams, Michael Y. Chow, Rick Famuyiwa and David Lonner along with co-executive producer Sean Combs, worked tirelessly on getting funding for the film that caused a bidding war at Sundance.
Called an urban coming of age tale, DOPE will hit you where it counts when you least expect it to all while making you laugh and maybe even tear up a bit. It will most certainly start a few conversations after seeing it. While the film does have some strong language it is not to be missed this weekend.
