This week, Tidal a music streaming service by Jay Z, released a new clip for Jake Gyllenhaal’s upcoming film SOUTHPAW. In order to watch the clip you had to sign up for service, which required giving your credit card information, even for the free trial. While it does tell you that you can cancel the service before the free trail ends and not be charged, how many of us actually remember to do so. While it is an interesting business plan I’m still not sure what a film about boxing has anything to do with a music streaming service or why the brand marriage made sense to The Weinstein Company. Here is what The Weinstein Company had to say about the collaboration:
“We’re thrilled to be collaborating with JAY Z and the incredible team at TIDAL on the newest and most innovative way to stream today’s top music and videos. TIDAL is pushing the boundaries of content sharing and has made a clear and strong commitment to supporting the artists, writers and producers who create that content and we support these artists on their extraordinary endeavor.”
While the film is high on my must see list it isn’t because of the new brand marriage, but instead of who is behind the film. Directed by the acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and written by Kurt Sutter (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Richard Wenk (THE MECHANIC) the riveting story of Billy “The Great” Hope has some heavy hitters behind it. Putting Fuqua together with Sutter is a match made in my very own movie heaven, add a story about boxing, Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams and I’m all in. Did I mention Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson also stars in the film as Billy’s long time friend and manager, and Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker as a retired fighter and trainer. On paper this film is setting itself up to be a contender to land in the top 5 movies of the year for me and would have to be pretty bad for me not to love every second of it. I guess only time will tell.
SOUTHPAW is set to hit theatres on July 24, 2015, check out the new clip that was released on Tidal below and let us know if you are excited for the films release.
