Every year, San Diego Comic-Con has thousands of movie, comic, and television fans gathered to see creators, studios, and celebrities promote their upcoming projects. Most people associate Comic-Con with superheroes, mainly the upcoming Marvel and DC news. While yes, much of Comic Con centers around superheroes, there’s also a lot for Horror fans to get excited about. From new trailers to exclusive announcements, here are the Horror Highlights from San Diego Comic Con 2015! (WARNING: Many of the clips below contain mature content).
SINISTER was considered one of the most disturbing horror films to come out in recent history. The upcoming sequel focuses on a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of “Wayward Pines”) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life brothers Robert and Dartanian Sloan) who find themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity. To promote the film, terrifying twins took over San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter frightening unsuspecting Comic-Con attendees with a slew of sinister projections of homemade inspired kill films over the weekend.
In addition to this, the Red Band Trailer was released on July 10th (WARNING, Red Band Trailers are NOT appropriate for all ages).
SINISTER 2 opens nationwide from Gramercy Pictures on August 21st, 2015
It’s no secret that I’m ecstatic for the upcoming film by Guillermo del Toro about a young woman being swept away to a world of secrets and horror by a mysterious man in an effort to escape her own dark past. Now, starting on September 18th, I’ll actually be able to walk through the world created by del Toro at this year’s Universal Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. A Press Release from Universal describes the upcoming attraction:
“Guillermo del Toro Presents Crimson Peak: Maze of Madness” will be unearthed as a three-dimensional living representation of the film, designed to send guests spiraling through the chilling world and in the footsteps of CRIMSON PEAK lead character, Edith Cushing, first as they venture from her home in America, then to the decaying and haunted Allerdale Hall mansion in a remote English countryside. With a foreboding “Beware of Crimson Peak” message that echos from Edith’s past, guests will navigate a labyrinth of paranormal tortured souls who have born witness to the estate’s dark history of unspeakable acts …and who continue to reside in vengeful, ghostly forms.
As if I couldn’t be more excited for October, CRIMSON PEAK just seems to be the gift that keeps on giving with the announcement of this new attraction, as attending Halloween Horror Nights is an annual tradition for my friends and me.
CRIMSON PEAK opens in theaters on October 16th, 2015.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES
We go now from a modern Gothic tale to a modern update of a Victorian Romance…with zombies (so yeah, to another modern Gothic tale). Seth Grahame-Smith’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES was a New York Times Best-Seller that launched not only the author but Quirk Books into a realm of popularity that they never anticipated. The film adaptation of the book has been in development hell for the last several years, leading many fans to believe that they would never see the book on the big screen, especially after the adaptation of Grahame-Smith’s ABRAHAM LINCOLN VAMPIRE HUNTER under-performed at the box office. However, the project is indeed happening, and cast members Lily James and Matt Smith were at Comic-Con to promote the project. I was lucky enough to produce interviews from the press line for The Popcorn Talk Network, so check out the interviews to see what the cast and crew had to say about the project!
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES will open in theaters on February 5th, 2016.
You’d better watch out, Legendary’s film about the Christmas demon who punishes bad children will be coming to theaters this December. At a panel in Hall H, director Michael Dougherty, Toni Collete and Adam Scott talked a little bit about the project, the influence of Amblin Entertainment Films, and about why people should see the movie this Christmas. Much to the surprise of fans, much of the movie seems to be focuses around a VACATION-like family dynamic before the monster even shows up. With just as much emphasis on the humor as the scares, KRAMPUS seems like it’s going to be a really fun trick and treat this holiday season in the same vein as GREMLINS. Sadly the trailer still has yet to be released, but fans can catch the Comic-Con panel here:
KRAMPUS opens in theaters on December 4th, 2015.
THE HELL WITHIN
The musical sensation Slash has another upcoming horror movie about one woman’s quest to save a little girl from demonic forces in the heart of the Brazilian jungle, but he needs help from fans to make this movie a reality. He’s lookingto engage fans in the making of the film from start to finish. Supporters will have a variety of unique on-going incentives and exclusive rewards that will be offered through every stage of the film’s completion at TheHellWithin.com. Slash has been reported saying
“Fans have always been a source of motivation for me. This is about including them in the creative process, and offering them rewards for inspiring us.”
SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE
Have you ever been told that you should assemble a zombie emergency kit for the inevitable zombie apocalypse? Well, who knows more about being prepared than scouts! During Comic-Con, Paramount released clips, the poster for the film, and gave away Scout badges at Petco Park.
In the film, three scouts and lifelong friends join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world’s most unlikely team of heroes. When their peaceful town is ravaged by a zombie invasion, they’ll fight for the badge of a lifetime and put their scouting skills to the test to save mankind from the undead.
SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE will open in theaters October 30th, 2015.
I’ve written before about how excited I am for the upcoming zombie film COOTIES, and at Comic Con fans were treated to an advanced screening of the film. For those who were unable to attend, Lionsgate posted a Red Band clip to give people a taste of what they missed at the screening (WARNING: Mature Content).
COOTIES will be released in select theaters and on demand September 18th, 2015.
Going from the big screen to the small screen, MTV’s SCREAM has actually surprised many fans of the franchise with how well the films has been adapted into a television series (I was certainly one of those skeptics, but I have to admit that I’m really enjoying it). They made the surprising announcement that Bella Thorne, whose character Nina Patterson endured a bloody, bikini-clad death at the hands of the killer in episode one, would be returning to the series via a mysterious flashback in an all-new episode of SCREAM airing Tuesday, August 25th. At their booth on the exhibition floor, fans could also have a bloody good time by taking a note from Ghostface (myself included).
They also released an exclusive trailer.
I was able to chat with a few of the cast members while covering Comic Con for Afterbuzz TV.
SCREAM airs Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
SCREAM QUEENS is the upcoming show on Fox from Ryan Murphy that centers around a serial killer causing terror to spread like wild fire on a college campus. Not only did the series premiered its pilot at Comic Con, but it also had a carnival style ride which plunged Comic Con attendees 120 ft. to promote the series.
I was elated to talk to the cast about the upcoming show.
SCREAM QUEENS will premiere on Fox on September 22nd, 2015.
For many Z Nation fans, the finale of the first season left everyone wondering how Warren and the gang were going to get out of this mess (and by mess I mean literal nuclear annihilation). Fear not, because according to the cast there are still many adventures ahead on the way to California! I talked to the show runner and cast about what we can expect from season two!
Season 2 will premiere on September 11th, 2015.
ASH VS. EVIL DEAD
I’ve saved the best for last! On July 10th, the long awaited series ASH VS. EVIL DEAD finally got an official trailer! Grab your boomsticks everyone, because you’re about to see something really groovy!
Words can’t express how happy this trailer makes me! Personally, seeing this was my Comic-Con highlight. It perfectly captures the humor, action, scares, and fun that the Evil Dead series is known for. Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless look to be in top form with their performances, the humor is on point, and the effects are both practical and intentionally cheesy. It openly acknowledges that Ash isn’t as young as he used to be, but is still willing to rev up his chainsaw to fight evil even though he’s past his prime. Sadly, it doesn’t seem like Jane Levy, who played Mia in the 2013 EVIL DEAD remake, will be making an appearance, but other than that, this trailer has given me just about everything I wanted to see from the series.
The series premieres on Starz this Halloween at 9PM. Happy Halloween, everyone! It’s going to be a real treat!
