No-one could have predicted or been prepared for the craze that came from SHARKNADO. Two years ago the network that has been known to make cheesy monster movies premiered SHARKNADO, a made for TV disaster film with a premise that was so wonky you had to see it to believe it. What no-one expected was for it to become a worldwide sensation that would have everyone talking about the film that is so bad it is absolutely fantastic. In case you have been living under a rock and have no clue what I am talking about I will give you a crash course.
SHARKNADO first aired on the Syfy Network in 2013 and starred several actors, who’s careers have disappeared faster than my last piece of chocolate cake, like Tara Reid, Ian Ziering, Cassie Scerbo, and John Heard. The film takes place in Los Angeles when a cyclone hits causing man-eating sharks to be scooped up in water spouts and flood the city with shark-infested seawater. As if sharks taking over LA isn’t enough they added tornadoes, shark infested tornadoes of course hence the name, SHARKNADO. Ziering plays Fin a local bar owner who sets out with a group of friends Baz (Simmons), Nova (Scerbo) and George (Heard), to rescue his estranged wife, April (Reid), and teenage daughter Claudia (Aubrey Peeples) after his bar is destroyed. In one hilarious scene after another the group does everything possible to survive the sharknadoes and loses more than a few people to the big bad flying sharks. Full of action, craziness and shark attacks the film ends as any shark attack film should with Fin jumping into a sharks mouth wielding a chainsaw to rescue Nova. Thanks to social media the film quickly grew a cult following and when Syfy aired the film for the third time due to it’s increased popularity it became the most watched original film encore in Syfy history.
Soon Syfy announced a sequel to air in 2014 that would be set in NYC and allowed fans to vote on the title via twitter. SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE aired on July 30, 2013 and was the highest premiering film on the Syfy network. Reid and Ziering returned to reprise their roles and it seemed like everyone in Hollywood big or small wanted in on the action this time. The film had so many celebrity cameos I think the sharks started to complain on set. In the second film Fin and his ex-wife April are flying to New York to promote her new book How to Survive a Sharknado and Other Unnatural Disasters, when the plane is suddenly in the middle of a storm and the engine of the plane is lost to an airborne shark. After a crash landing, by Fin of course, April is rushed to the hospital after losing her hand to a flying shark. Fin sets off to warn the city of the danger ahead and save his family who are sightseeing in NY. Two sharknadoes converge into an even more powerful storm and Fin must find a way to save the city, again. Luckily Fin as always saves the day and finds April’s hand in a shark’s mouth and takes the ring from it to propose remarriage, and she accepts.
When the third installment of SHARKNADO was announced people wondered if fans would still tune in, with most online phenomenons have a tendency to burn out as quickly as they became a hit, but judging by social media fans not only tuned in but were having a blast with the hysterical satirical film. The coolest part about this franchise is not only the crazy things that happen in the film but the way that the fans have reacted to it. People have Sharknado parties, and fans of all ages love it even kids. Director Anthony C. Ferrante recently told Variety that he is eager to create another sequel as long as the fans want it and keep tuning in.
SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO aired last night on the Syfy network and trended worldwide on social media. Fans couldn’t wait to see where Fin and April ended up next and how in the hell they were going to top SHARKNADO 1 & 2, but somehow they did it again. The Asylum, along with writer Thunder Levin and director Anthony Ferrante clearly have a go big or go home mindset when it comes to this franchise and it is just so bad (completely intentionally) that it is so good. In the third film the entire east coast, from DC (where Fin is getting an award from president Mark Cuban) all the way to Orlando (where Fins family is vacationing), is at stake and Cassie Scerbo returns to reprise her role as Nova and is better than ever after suffering from “post traumatic shark disorder”(a totally real thing), and fights alongside Fin for most of the film. Kudos to the filmmakers for giving us a kick ass female character, satirical or not, we need more bad ass women in films and Nova, we can all agree, is completely bad ass.
Within minutes sharks start falling from the sky and we are thrown into action. Think the cameos in SHARKNADO 2 were awesome well SHARKNADO 3 has more cameos than an entire season of Entourage, everyone from Lou Ferrigno, Rick Fox, Ann Coulter, Lorenzo Lamas, Maria Menounos to the Hoff himself. Yes I mean David Hasselhoff who plays Fins colonel dad who works for NASA and takes the film literally out of this world. Bo Derek stars as April’s hovering mother and Mark Cuban is the President of good old US of A and has some pretty amazing one-liners including of course how he was once a shark. Filled with even more action, even more sharks and even more over the top dialogue SHARKNADO 3 proved to be just as hilarious as the first two and left fans wanting more and don’t worry, with these guys there is always more. As they said in the movie “We aren’t done yet” and SHARKNADO 4 is coming. If you haven’t watched SHARKNADO 3 yet don’t worry Syfy is running it again this Saturday July 26 7/6 central, watch it you know you want to, and you get to choose whether one of the main characters makes it to the fourth installment of is left in SHARKNADO 3 by tweeting using the hashtag given at the end of the film. You have to watch the film to find out who, I can’t do everything for you!
With a fourth film green lit where in the world will they go next you ask, well Ferrante recently told Variety he wanted to go international. All I know is I’m totally ready to get eaten by a shark so if the team at SHARKNADO is looking for anyone, they know where to find me. Let us know what you think of SHARKNADO 3 and where you would like to see the sharks attack next?
