Sony Pictures debuted the official trailer for the upcoming film SPECTRE the newest installment in the 007 franchise. Daniel Craig returns to the big screen as Bond, James Bond on his newest mission. Also returning is Ralph Fiennes, Ben Wishaw, Naomi Harris, and Rory Kinnear.
A cryptic message from his past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a quest to uncover a sinister organization while M (Ralph Fiennes) battles political forces that want to shut down the British secret service.
Finally we may get a glimpse into why they chose SPECTRE as the films titled which sent the rumor mill buzzing and 007 fans anticipating the newest film. Bond fans may remember that SPECTRE was once an acronym for Ian Fleming’s nefarious Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. Does the new title stand for Fleming’s Special Executive or does it stand for the ghosts in Bond’s past coming back to haunt him or could it be both.
In the new trailer we see Bond at a Day Of The Dead festival reminiscent of the Mardi-Gras scene in 1965’s THUNDERBALL. I don’t know how Craig can still look dashing in a skull mask, but I guess that is why he is James Bond. As in any Bond film there are gorgeous women, sexy cars and really cool gadgets. The trailer shows Q (Ben Wishaw) introducing Bond to his new ultra-speedy Aston Martin DB10, which he says goes “0-60 in 3.2 seconds, with a few little tricks up her sleeve” and I for one can’t wait to find out what those tricks are. We see Franz Oberhauser, played by Christoph Waltz, with a surprisingly un-scarred face, Dave Bautista kicking ass and taking names as Mr. Hinx, and plenty of car chases, explosions and intense stunts (did you see that helicopter) as any good Bond film should. So why is Franz Oberhauser telling James Bond he is the author of all his pain? We will have to wait till November to find out.
There are plenty of nods to 007’s past in the trailer as well that should keep franchise fans happy, from pieces of of the theme to ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE in the score, Oberhauser’s Dr No-influenced Nehru jacket, the mountain top where Bond meets Swan is similar to alpine medical retreat in OHMSS, and the possibility of Bond going rouge (as hinted at with the Q storyline) which you may remember from 1989’s LICENCE TO KILL. It is safe to say the 007 references to the past are a wonderful nod to the history of the franchise.
As in any 007 film, “They say you’re finished, I think you’re just getting started”and boy is he ever. Bond is back in on the action and causing trouble with all of his superiors. SPECTRE is set to hit theatres in the US on November 6, 2015. Check out the new trailer below and let us know if you are excited to see Bond back in action.
