Giddyup Partner, because the long awaited trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT has finally been released.
The upcoming Western film is written and directed by Tarantino and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern. Set in Wyoming after the Civil War, the film revolves around eight outlaws seeking refuge in a stagecoach stopover on the mountain pass during a blizzard. A man known as The Hangman is escorting a woman known as The Prisoner to her execution. However, when the two of them stop to rest with our six other misfits, it quickly becomes apparent that one of these outcasts is not what he claims to be.
Given Tarantino’s previous work, this film looks to be a Western version of RESERVOIR DOGS, where one person is claiming to be something they’re not and the rest of the group is left to deduce who the traitor could be. Watching the trailer, I really appreciate the setup for this movie, as I appreciate anything that feels like it’s a spin on an Agatha Christie scenario (I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a fan of the “group of people stuck in one place while a mystery unravels” cliché). Include an all-star cast, witty Tarantino style dialogue, and some over-the-top action sequences, and you have the recipe for what sounds like a great popcorn flick!
As excited as I am to see another Tarantino film, I’m a little disappointed that The Prisoner seems to be the only female character out of the titular eight. KILL BILL was the first Tarantino film I ever saw, so seeing female characters take a back seat in his subsequent films is a little disappointing. That being said, The Prisoner may very well become our main character, so I’ll reserve judgment until the film is released.
What did you think of the trailer? Are you excited to see this film come out of development hell, or do you think your time is better spent getting a royal with cheese? Be sure to let us know @TheMovieChickk!
