Jeepers Creepers, where’d you get those peepers? New life is being given to yet another horror franchise, as the third installment in the JEEPERS CREEPERS franchise is officially in development with production expected to begin in Vancouver early in 2016. Though plot details are still vague, there is enough information announced to please fans of the franchise.
The first film in the series debuted in 2001, introducing audiences to the Creeper, an ancient creature that awakens every 23 years to hunt human beings to assimilate their body parts and organs (not to be confused with the DC Creeper, who is way more hilarious and a lot less homicidal). According to Variety, the Francis Ford Coppola backed franchise is reuniting the original creative team from the first two films including writer-director Victor Salva. Also returning to the project is Jonathan Breck reprising his role as the Creeper, as well as Brandon Smith returning as Sergeant Davis Tubbs.
The Creeper has been absent from theaters since 2003, and even though these films don’t exactly rank high on my list of favorite monster flicks, there is something very charming about looking back on this franchise because of its reliance on makeup and practical effects. Though there was CGI for many aerial scenes, the majority of the time the Creeper is on screen, it’s all makeup and puppetry. As a product of the early 2000s, this film predated the sad decade in horror where original monsters took a back seat to torture porn and found-footage supernatural films, so the fact that the original team feels like it’s time to go back to that is strangely uplifting. This and other recent film announcements make me feel like we’re finally ready to go back to actual monster movies, that we can put shaky cameras and torture porn behind us and move forward with more original creature features. I know that it seems contradictory to say that about the third entry in the franchise, but I’m certainly glad it’s not taking the Creeper 23 years to return to the silver screen.
What do you think of the news? Does this announcement for the third entry have you wishing the Creeper was still in hibernation, or does it have you hungry for more? Be sure to let us know @TheMovieChickk!
