A New Twist On A Classic Monster! The Mummy Could Be Played By A Woman!

There’s no question that the Universal Horror Monsters have left a tremendous impact not only on the world of horror, but in the realm of cinema. Everyone immediately recognizes the classic portrayals of THE WOLFMAN, FRANKENSTEIN , and DRACULA from the Universal Monster lineup. One of these franchises, THE MUMMY, saw new life in the late 90s with the release of Stephen Sommer’s remake about a group of misfits looking for Hamunaptra. These films took the classic horror story and turned it into a comedic action-adventure series (which was amazing, btw). Well, the next iteration of the series could see even more changes for Universal’s classic story, as the studio is currently considering a story focused around a female monster with a brand new backstory! The Mummy has traditionally been played by a man, originally portrayed by Boris Karloff in 1932 and Arnold Vosloo in 1999, so this would be the first time one of Universal’s classic monsters would be re-envisioned in such a unique way. The upcoming reboot is planned to be the first film in a series of interconnected monster films, as Universal hopes to tap into THE AVENGERS model of creating a film franchise. The other potential films revolve around the characters of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein, and of course, the vampire hunter Van Helsing.

According to THR’s report, “The final decision will be based on finding the right actor or actress for the role, as director Alex Kurtzman and writer Jon Spaihts prepare their remake for March 24, 2017.” As a result, they are looking at two story options for the modern setting of the upcoming film, one if the casting goes to a man, and another if the casting goes to a woman. When I initially heard a few years ago that Universal was looking to reboot THE MUMMY, a film series that I had fallen in love with when I was 11 years old when the 1999 remake was released in theaters, I was skeptical to say the least. But when I heard that ultimately the studio was hoping to lead up to a monster mash film, I was willing to forgive rebooting a series that I love for the promise of seeing these characters onscreen together again. I have a soft spot in my heart for films like HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, and THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (or even the ridiculous MONSTER SQUAD), because there’s just something so endearing about seeing a bunch of iconic characters come together to either try to save the world or enslave it (depending on the film). As excited as I am at the prospect of one of these iconic creatures being a woman, and not just being “the bride” of one of these monsters, I’m also very concerned about the overall tone of these upcoming films. Will the studios go for a more adventure-oriented tone, or will they actually try to make these creatures scary again? Will these classic monsters be the heroes of these films or will they be the villains? The fact of the matter is that, as loveable as these creatures are, they haven’t been considered scary by the general public for a long time, and they don’t always make the best protagonists. Since this upcoming MUMMY film is the first step in a larger plan, I will be very interested in seeing the direction the studio will be taking with these upcoming films.
