Disney said e komo mai to Hawaiian native actress Auli’i Cravalho with their casting announcement earlier this week. Cravalho will be playing the titular role in Disney’s upcoming film MOANA, their first film with a Polynesian princess, and she couldn’t be happier.
She’ll be joining Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who voices the demigod Maui in the film. He welcomed her Tuesday on Instagram:
Given the distressing trend of whitewashing in Hollywood, it’s positively refreshing to see Disney cast a pair of native Polynesian actors to play Polynesian characters. We’ll have to see how the film does, but for now, this is an incredibly promising start.
