THE RING And THE GRUDGE, Together At Last! Watch The Trailer For SADAKO VS. KAYAKO!

Who doesn’t love a good horror mash up? FREDDY VS JASON was a ridiculous romp, and AVP was a fun scifi showdown, but it’s hard to imagine a horror crossover as being anything besides just that: silly fun. When I think of horror crossovers, I tend to think of films more like ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN than I do anything that actually has any chance of actually scaring me. Surely there’s not a franchise around that could take two established horror icons and still make them threatening…or is there?

Enter the two vengeful spirits Sadako and Kayako from the Japanese RINGU and JU-ON franchises respectively, put them in the same room, watch the helpless people caught between the two and you have the recipe for what is either the first legitimately scary monster mash up, or another delightful horror “VS” film.

Though American audiences only familiar with the American versions of these films may not know it, both of these horror franchises are still going strong, as the third film in THE RING franchise, RINGS, will be released in October of this year and Sam Raimi is currently producing the re-remake of THE GRUDGE (is “re-remake” the right term? What do you call the reboot of a film that was already a remake of another film? Come back to me on this one…). In fact, this upcoming crossover movie is the result of an April Fool’s Day joke from the team promoting the latest JU-ON film, JU-ON: THE FINAL. However, when the joke went viral across the internet, NBCUniversal Japan and the Kadokawa Corporation decided to team up two bring these horror icons together in the very real crossover I never knew I always wanted.  The film will be directed by Shiraishi Koji and will star Yamamoto Mizuki as one of the very unfortunate human beings caught up in the middle of this ghostly brawl.

Sadly this is just a teaser, and details of the overall plot are still relatively vague. My only real concern about this crossover is that neither of these two franchises are built upon action. These two leading ladies in the horror world aren’t known for walking around with knives and machetes, but rather by being evocative of a more existential, unknowable, and inescapable type of terror. Their mere presence onscreen is usually more terrifying than most of what you find in your run-of-the mill slasher flick. Seeing Sadako crawl out of a TV and seeing Kayako show up under someone’s bed sheets are images that are seared into the consciousness of everyone who sees these films, but how would the two of them even begin to fight one another? And more importantly, why would they fight? They both seem to be content lashing out against any and everyone who crosses them, but how would they each fight an opponent who couldn’t die? Does this mean that they’ll let bygones be bygones and team up against the people in the house instead? Only time will tell. Personally though, if they do fight, my money’s on Kayako to win this bout. There are loopholes that let you escape Sadako’s curse, but no one escapes the grudge.
