In December of 2015, J.J. Abrams took us back to a galaxy far far away with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII THE FORCE AWAKENS. For a film that had the daunting challenge of living up to insanely high fan expectations, avoiding the pitfalls of the prequels, and setting the stage for a new generation of iconic characters, THE FORCE AWAKENS did an exceptional job. For me personally, though the film’s plot was a little too derivative of A NEW HOPE, overall I thought it was a superb film that had great action, stellar visual effects, and great characters setups for future plot lines. With the success brought on by THE FORCE AWAKENS, many fans began to wonder if the spin-off films would continue this trend, especially since many longtime fans of the Expanded Universe had to watch Disney wipe the slate clean with an official list of what’s canonical and what is not. How could a spin off film possibly live up to not only the standard set by the new film, but also the years of supplemental books, video games, and comics it would be replacing? In enters the trailer for the upcoming ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY to once again blow everyone’s expectations out of the water.
The film is directed by Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA 2014) and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk. The story focuses on Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a criminal who has been recruited by the Rebel army to steal the Empire’s plans for the Death Star. Will Jyn and her wayward band of Rebels succeed with their lives and their ship intact? We’ll find out this December. It’s a little difficult to write this article, as I am completely overwhelmed by the massive amount of feels this trailer has given me. Everything about this trailer, the music, the sets, the visual effects, and the aesthetics, not only scream STAR WARS, but the scream the original STAR WARS, as this movie takes place shortly before the events of A NEW HOPE. I expressed much of my excitement for the this movie when I named it my third most anticipated film of 2016, but at that time I only had the cast photo to go on. This trailer has completely dispelled any reservations I had about the overall quality of the upcoming film. Much of my excitement is centered around both Edward’s directing pedigree as well as the introduction of the new character Jyn. Though it wasn’t a hit with everyone, I adored Edward’s take on the GODZILLA, and I can’t wait to see his contribution to this franchise. As for Jyn, anyone who has watched the animated series THE CLONE WARS and STAR WARS: REBELS can recognize how great the STAR WARS universe has been in the last decade about creating compelling and well-rounded female characters. I am pleased to say it looks like ROGUE ONE is continuing this trend, although unlike the advertising for THE FORCE AWAKENS, it isn’t shying away from the fact that our main character is a woman and that the cast as a whole has become very diverse. If this trailer is any indications, then it looks like we are in for quite a wild ride this December.
