If you were a kid during the magical and strange era that was the 1980s, chances are you were scarred for life by the full length feature of your favorite show about robots, TRANSFORMERS. Originally released in 1986, Hasbro at the time viewed the film as an excuse to release a brand new toy line of the series of the same name. The result was a weird, acid trip of a movie where a lot of kids’ favorite characters were unceremoniously killed off to make way for Rodimus Prime and friends (although I’m not really complaining, the film gave us RC, one of the best in all of Transformers: Prime, as well as several others that would eventually become some of my personal favorites). The movie, though bizarre to say the least, featured an all-star voice cast that included Peter Cullen, Eric Idle, Casey Kasem, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, Frank Welker, and Orson Wells in his final role. To this day, longtime Transformers fans look back on this strange film with a nostalgic fondness, a reminder of the era this franchise was born into (as well as a hint of sadness, as the film set the precedent for the death of Optimus Prime in just about every iteration of the franchise). Well, fans who appreciate the effect the movie had on the franchise can now rejoice, as Shout! Factory and Hasbro Studios have announced a collaborative effort to bring the iconic animated feature to the home entertainment marketplace in the U.S. and Canada in honor of the film’s 30th Anniversary.
According to Stephen Davis, the Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President of Hasbro:
“TRANSFORMERS – THE MOVIE played a huge role in the brand’s early success, laying the foundation for major motion pictures, several successful TV series, clothing and apparel, toys and much more. We are thrilled to work with Shout! Factory to deliver the original movie to fans in a completely remastered HD experience.”
Melissa Boag, the Senior Vice President of Kids & Family Entertainment at Shout! Factory added:
“TRANSFORMERS – THE MOVIE is a highly sought-after animated feature, boasting a large fan following and consumer interest.
