Once upon a time, there was an animated film that exemplified the Disney Renaissance at its peak. It was an updated take on a classic fairy tale that became just as timeless as the story it was based on. It had stellar animation, a phenomenal cast, and music that touched the hearts of children and adults alike. It was a story of patience, love, and redemption, that made audiences believe that through love and understanding, a happily ever after was truly possible. Now, a full 15 years after this film’s release, Disney has treated us to the first full trailer of the upcoming live action remake of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
Ok, pull it together. Let’s talk about this trailer objectively…but goodness is it difficult to do! This trailer is designed to strike at the hearts of everyone who loved the original. It’s impossible not to get the chills when you hear the music play the same notes from the original film that inspired wonder and fantasy (side note: can we take a minute to admire the genius that is Alan Menken? Ok, carry on). Now that a full trailer is released, we get to see the full cast of stellar actors in costume, and everything about this film that seemed promising now seems to have come together to create something truly spectacular! Everything about the visuals, from the costumes to the CGI, look just as compelling as they did for the live action take on THE JUNGLE BOOK that came out earlier this year. However, unlike THE JUNGLE BOOK, there isn’t much in the way of story that can be improved upon when it comes to the original BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. THE JUNGLE BOOK excelled because they were allowed to improve upon the source material; the original BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is a nearly perfect film, so adapting it to the live-action medium still raises questions about whether or not the film will a beat-by-beat replica of the 1991 feature (as many have speculated with the initial teaser that was released five months ago).
There’s also the danger of over-using the CGI when practical effects could have sufficed for certain aspects of the film. After all, if the majority of your characters are computer animated, why wouldn’t I just go ahead and rewatch the animated film? Luckily I think this film’s stylized take on the characters will allow it to create its own atmosphere, one that captures the feeling of the first but also creates a look all its own. The only other thing that causes a little concern for me is that we have yet to hear any of the actors sing any of the iconic songs. Again, Alan Menken’s music defined Disney musicals for the better part of a decade, doing them justice is no easy feat.
Let’s be honest, this is a film that is definitely banking on nostalgia to get you into the theater. Unlike many other remakes/reimaginings/sequels/etc., this movie actually looks like it knows how to capture the spirit of the original classic. Whether or not the story will do anything unique, or whether the music will live up to the original’s has yet to be seen. Do I think the new film will surpass the old? No, again because it’s the kind of film that’s nearly impossible to improve upon. However, watching this trailer I can’t help but feel like a little kid getting ready to watch one of her favorite fairy tales come to life. One thing is certain, I can’t wait to head to the theater to be told this tale as old as time.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will hit theaters in March 17, 2017.
